This department was formed with a vision to provide services to children, poor and wealthy; rural and urban of our community. Presently it is headed by Associate Prof. Dr. M Mizanur Rahman, MD and is assisted by Assistant Professors of the unit Dr. Mirza Md. Ziaul Islam, MD, Dr. Md Atiqul Islam, MCPS, DCH, MD and Registrar Dr. A. K. M. Tajuddin Bhuiyan MPH, DCH, MD (Examinee-Fjnal Part), Resident Medical Officer Dr. Jafor lqbal, MBBS,  MD (Final Part), Dr. Sultana MBBS, FCPS Part II. Besides them the unit has other well-qualified post-graduate students, trainee physicians. Our division provides comprehensive inpatient consultation for children with common, unusual or severe infections. Ten free beds are allocated for this unit in Ward-4 where patients are managed carefully and meticulously. Apart from the non-paying ward, patients are also seen in different paying wards as well as the cabins and PICU. On an average >100 patients are admitted in this unit per month receiving treatment for common infections like watery diarrhea, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, TB, Malaria, Enteric Fever, Dengue, Kala-Azar, Meningitis, Viral Encephalitis etc. and the cure rate is more than 80%. The department also has other services e.g. Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI), Family Planning Advice, community based programs like Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) etc. We are especially suited to provide comprehensive coordinated continuing care to children with complex chronic problems. There is also a follow up clinic every Wednesday attached to this department. Various researches on infectious diseases and community pediatrics are conducted in this unit. There have been many prestigious publications from this department at home and abroad. In near future this unit will establish community satellite clinics in pen­urban and rural area.

Services

As a Full-fledged Unit of Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital, specialists in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases assess, diagnose and treat children and teenagers who have infectious diseases or serious, complicated infections. These highly skilled experts also focus on infection prevention for high risk patients and managing infections if they occur. This unit uses a team approach – including faculties, registrar, resident medical officers with vast experience in pediatric infectious diseases, post-graduate students, trainee physicians registered nurses and other medical personals – to deliver the most personalized, effective treatment for children in a family-friendly environment. The unit also gives service to the following aspect by the well expert Asst. professor, specialists in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases diagnose and treat a wide range of diseases and conditions, such as:

  • Severe, complicated or recurrent infections.
  • Infections acquired during travel.
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
  • Infections in patients on immune modulating therapy.
  • Immune deficiencies disorder.
  • Unexplained fevers.
  • Issues related to multi-drug resistant diseases or infections, fatal viral diseases, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
  • Execution of immunization program of children and managing adverse reactions following immunization.
  • Follow-up and managing referred patients.
  • Organizing seminars/symposium,CME related to infectious diseases in children
  • Supervising, training, teaching Resident Students (Pediatrics) and other course’s students.
