Department of Neonatal Medicine & NICU

The Neonatology Department of Dhaka Shishu Hospital was established in July 1978 by late Prof Tofayel Ahmed and National Prof MR Khan. This was the first ever neonatal unit in Bangladesh. The unit was headed by retired Prof. Khaleda Banu with a capacity of 20 beds. Now the capacity of this unit has been extended to 40 beds (32 SCANU and 08 NICU) of which 23 are free beds and rest are paying. In SCANU there are beds where mother can stay with their baby. the new extension of this department is NICU, has been established in February 2014 and it was inaugurated by the National Prof Shaha Khatoon, Chairman, Management Board, Dhaka Shishu Hospital. The department has Prof. M. A, K. Azad Chowdhury as the Head of the faculty that comprises of Prof. M. Monir Hossain, Prof. Md Mahbubul Hoque, Associate Prof. Dr. Mahfuza Shirin, Associate Prof. Dr. Maksudur Rahman, Assistant Prof. Dr. Liton Chandra Saha, Dr. Rowshan Jahan Akter and Registrar Dr. M. A. Kamal and Dr. Nishat Jahan. MD Residence and FCPS Neonatology courses are running in this department.

Along with clinical and academic services. This department conducts different training programs like, ETAT, KMC, CNCP, HBB & workshops on different neonatal issues regularly. Different collaborative research projects also run in this unit.
